Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Emily Morgan Hotel was originally built as a Medical center, in original Gothic style by Ralph Cameron in 1924, a style that was popular among many architects nationwide in the 1920?s. The most peculiar aspect of the building design has to be the terra cotta gargoyles that line the walls of this unique building, each one depicting a different ailment. In 1976 the building was converted to a modern office building, and in 1984 the building was renovated again, ready for use as the Emily Morgan Hotel that you see today. Why is it known as the Emily Morgan? The Battle of the Alamo is widely regarded as the turning point in Texans war against independence from Mexico. Six weeks after this battle, the armies of Texas and Mexico moved their battles out to San Jacinto. During siesta time on April 21, 1836, the Texas army stormed the camp of Mexican General Santa Anna. He had posted no guards and was unprepared for the attack, consequently, the Texans won the decisive battle in less then an hour. Legend has it that a servant woman (known as Emily D. West) who had been captured by the Mexican forces was ‘entertaining’ the General in his tent as the attack was imminent. As the Texans approached, Emily delayed Gen. Santa Anna so long, that order could not be given in time to fend off the oncoming wave of soldiers. Emily was indentured to Colonel James Morgan, and as was custom at the time, she took on the name of her master, hence the more well known Emily Morgan. Ghosts of the Emily Morgan Hotel, San Antonio, TX The Emily Morgan Hotel is well renowned as one of the most haunted hotels in Texas, and is one of, if not the, most haunted location in San Antonio. People from around the world interested in the paranormal, visit the Emily Morgan for its haunted history, and many skeptics come away from their stay here, with a new found belief in ghosts. If you want to be in with the best chance of experiencing something paranormal, the 3rd, 7th, 9th, 11th and 12th floors are known to be the most active. During its time as a medical facility, some of these floors were used as a psychiatric facility. Guests and staff have witnessed many strange things on these floors throughout the years, as well as throughout the hotel. 12th Floor This floor was used for operations when the hotel was used as a hospital. Reports are often of unexplained noises, sudden smells of alcohol, and people being touched by unseen hands. 11th Floor One of the most frequent sightings occurs on the 11th floor, where the apparition of an elderly woman in a hospital gown has been seen walking along the hallway, on occasion she has been heard weeping, before walking off into one of the rooms. Also on this floor, guests often reported what sounds like a hospital gurney being wheeled along the hallway outside their rooms in the middle of the night, only when they open the door to check, the hallway is empty. 9th Floor On this floor guests have reported strange things such as wine bottles sliding off tables, as well as their toilet seat being repeatedly banged up and down in the middle of the night. Sounds from unoccupied rooms are also a frequent occurrence. 7th Floor Guests and staff alike often see the dark shape of human figures walking around this floor, after being seen they are said to walk through walls or doors. One family staying in one of the rooms on the 7th floor were awoken suddenly one night when all the electrical equipment turned on followed by a dark shape gliding through the room and through one of the walls. 3rd Floor A guest was awoken in the middle of night to the sound of humming, and witnessed the apparition of a young girl sitting at the bottom of her bed. The young girl apparently spoke to her, asking her if she would like to sing along! The following night the guest was awoken again, around the same time as the night before. However, this time it felt as though someone had got into bed with her, with her noticing the impression in the bed and the feeling of someone pushing against the side her body. On both occasions, the woman noticed a sudden drop in temperature. Another guest staying on the 3rd floor experienced the sound of a woman singing in the very same room, waking both her and son. Haunted Elevators It’s quite common for an elevator to pick up faults, and the vast majority of ‘haunted elevator’ stories can be put down to faulty wiring. The elevators at the Emily Morgan however, have been repeatedly inspected with no fault being found. It’s strange then, how they seem to make calls when empty, and persistently go from 6th to the 7th floor and back again! They head past the floor that you have pressed, and inexplicably take you to the hotel basement, which was once the morgue, and then refuse to budge. Alamo Ghosts The Emily Morgan is situated overlooking the Alamo, one of the most haunted locations in Texas! At night you may just catch a glimpse of long dead soldiers if you look out of your hotel room. During the Alamo, more than 600 soldiers lost their lives. General Santana ordered the bodies of the dead Texan soldiers to be piled up and burned, including the likes of Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett. Are they still defending the area in death, or are they looking to avenge their undignified end?
